Standouts this year: the free Storytime + LEGO combo at every BCC library branch on Mondays and Thursdays 10-11am; a free Deep Sea Diver science pop-up at the Queensland Museum (10am and 2pm sessions, 45 minutes, ages 5-12, capacity 30); paid $8 sessions at the Powerhouse's rooftop Art Studio for ages 7-14; and a $15 half-day photography workshop at the Kangaroo Point cliffs. Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September, 10am-4pm, entirely free — twenty hands-on art stations spread across all three floors, plus live music on the water terrace and a picnic lawn overlooking the river. New this year: a First Nations weaving station on Saturday afternoon led by a Torres Strait design collective, a hands-on ceramics wheel table with a professional potter (kids under 8 need a parent), and an outdoor light-painting-photography demo at dusk on Saturday. Bring your own picnic — the café will be packed by 11am. Pram-friendly throughout, breastfeeding room on level 2, quiet-room retreat on level 3 for over-stimulated kids and their parents.

The revamped splash-and-play area is back Saturday 20 September after eight weeks of renovation — new shaded shelters (SPF 50 fabric, replaced every three years), a toddler paddling pool at 400mm depth with independent temperature control, a proper adult coffee cart parked at the shaded end, plus a two-cubicle change-room with baby-change facilities. Water hours run 9am to 4:30pm daily. Bring towels; hire is available but slow. Council has also added a quiet corner with sensory-friendly toys for kids who need a break from the splashing — that alone is the smartest upgrade.

Twelve indoor picks curated for this week's forecast — the BOM's giving us a 70% chance of afternoon storms through the weekend. La Boite Kids at Kelvin Grove runs a Saturday-morning storytelling session $18 per family, ages 3-8. Little Big Studio in West End does drop-in painting sessions $15/hour, all-ages. BOING! in Chermside has an under-5 hour every Thursday 10am. Also on the list: the Queensland Maritime Museum touch-tank ($12 all-in), the Sciencentre at South Brisbane, Powerhouse's kids-only ArtLab, and the Cinema Vecchio kids-only Sunday matinee at 10am.

The immersive Bluey exhibit will stay open through Wednesday 31 October — pre-book after-school 4pm sessions if you want to skip the school-holiday crush. Weekday early-morning sessions (9:30am and 10:30am) are the lowest-crowd option, and Wednesday afternoons are traditionally the quietest weekday. The exhibit's Grannies section has been updated with a new interactive Rita+Janet dance-along, plus a fresh Bandit workshop station where kids can 'help him solve a real dad crisis'. Café is packed at lunchtime; bring a snack. Parking is free at the QAGOMA underground car park after 3pm.

The 12 October event runs at Sandgate across three age brackets (7-9, 10-12, 13-15), all distances scaled for age — the 7-9 bracket is a 50m swim in the calm-water lagoon, 2km bike, 500m run. Entry $22 per athlete, includes finisher medal, timing chip, race t-shirt and post-race breakfast. Late entries close Sunday 21 September 11:59pm — capacity 800 kids, and the 10-12 bracket is currently at 92% booked. Bike-check and rego is Friday 10 October at Sandgate Aquatic Centre 3-6pm.
